There’s no better way to experience Hanoi than on foot. From winding alleys and tree-lined boulevards to tranquil lakes, the city reveals its magic step by step. Take your time, follow your curiosity, and uncover both timeless corners and modern surprises with these three self-guided walking tours.

Hoan Kiem & the French Quarter
Just south of the Old Quarter, this walk takes you through wide boulevards, leafy parks, and elegant French colonial buildings. Start at Hoan Kiem Lake, then head to St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Ly Quoc Su, where street life unfolds all around you. Nearby, the yellow villa at Hang Trong Gardens and the Vietnamese Women’s Museum are worth a visit.

Continue to Ba Trieu Street for a quick bite—try phở or cơm rang gà at a street stall. Stroll down Nguyen Du to Thien Quang Lake, then cross into Reunification Park, where you can relax by the water or rent a swan boat.

End your walk at the grand Hanoi Opera House and enjoy a coffee at the Metropole Hotel, soaking in the charm of Hanoi’s French Quarter.
Markets, Bridges & Banana Island
This walk takes you from the heart of the Old Quarter to quiet farmland on the edge of the city. Start with a creamy egg coffee at Café Pho Co, hidden behind a silk shop at 11 Hàng Gai. Head through the alley to the rooftop for great views of Hoan Kiem Lake.

Next, walk down Hàng Đào to Đồng Xuân Market, then turn onto Cầu Đông and explore a side street full of spice and fruit vendors—a great spot to pick up local ingredients.

Continue along Hàng Khoai and Xưởng Cầu to reach the historic Long Biên Bridge. Built during French colonial times, it offers views of riverside farms and homes. Cross the bridge and take the stairs down to Banana Island, a peaceful haven of greenery far removed from the city’s noise.

On the way back, walk the opposite side of the bridge to enjoy a new perspective of Hanoi.
Historic Hanoi & Truc Bach Lake
This photogenic walk blends history, culture, and great street food. Start on Phùng Hưng Street, where colorful murals along the railway arches tell stories of old Hanoi—perfect for photos.

Turn left onto Hàng Cót, then continue down Phan Đình Phùng, one of Hanoi’s most beautiful tree-lined streets. Stop by the Northern Gate of the Citadel, still marked by war, and visit Cửa Bắc Church just across the road.

Head toward Trúc Bạch Lake via Hùng Vương Street. Don’t miss the Quan Thánh Temple, then walk along Thanh Niên Street, flanked by two lakes. Turn onto Trúc Bạch Street, then cross into Ngũ Xã Island, a local food hub famous for phở cuốn and phở chiên phồng.

End your walk with a peaceful stroll back along Nguyễn Tri Phương or stop by the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Ancient Citadel nearby.
